Abstract

This study examines the impact of social inequality on intergenerational mobility in urban areas through a mixed-method approach combining quantitative analysis of income, education, and occupational data with qualitative interviews and thematic assessments of lived experiences. Results demonstrate that persistent inequalities in education, health, housing, and labor market access significantly constrain upward mobility for children from disadvantaged households while consolidating advantages for those from affluent families. The findings highlight that intergenerational income elasticity remains high in segregated neighborhoods, reflecting low mobility, whereas educational attainment and digital access emerge as critical pathways to opportunity. Health disparities, such as exposure to environmental risks and limited healthcare access, further reduce life chances, reinforcing socioeconomic immobility across generations. Social networks and parental occupational connections were shown to play decisive roles in determining labor market entry, perpetuating cycles of privilege. Gender and racial disparities exacerbate these patterns, revealing that intersectional disadvantage remains deeply embedded in urban structures. Policy interventions—including housing mobility programs, school funding reforms, digital equity initiatives, and community investments—demonstrated partial effectiveness but require long-term, multi-sectoral commitments to dismantle structural barriers. Ultimately, the study concludes that improving intergenerational mobility in urban contexts requires comprehensive strategies that integrate education, health, housing, labor market policies, and technological inclusion. Such approaches are essential not only for expanding individual opportunity but also for ensuring equitable and sustainable urban development.
